How Folder Access Works
This depends on which version you have, because the two are built against different macOS security models.
The direct download is a notarized app that runs outside the sandbox. You grant it Full Disk Access once in System Settings, and from then on it can reach anything you can — including system-level locations like /Library/Caches that a sandboxed app can never see.
The App Store version is sandboxed, so it starts with access to nothing. On first launch you choose which folders to grant — normally just your home folder — through the standard macOS panel. Access is remembered between launches, and you can review or revoke it in Settings at any time. Some folders protected by macOS need their own separate grant, and the app asks for each one only when a scan actually needs it. Free & Paid

- Unlock to clean: removing what a scan found — cleaning junk, deleting duplicates and similar photos, removing large files, uninstalling apps, and clearing browsing data — requires an unlock.

App Store or Direct Download?
Spotless comes in two versions, and they are not the same app with a different price tag. The direct download runs outside the macOS sandbox; the App Store version has to run inside it, because Apple requires that of everything on the store. The sandbox is what closes off part of a disk cleaner’s job, so the App Store version can do less — and it’s better you know which parts before you pick.
The shared core is the same in both: rule-based junk cleaning, the disk usage tree, duplicate files, similar photos, large files, developer clutter under ~/Library/Developer, browser privacy cleaning, and the free unlimited scanning that shows you the whole result before you pay.

Nothing in that list is missing out of laziness — each one was measured against a real sandboxed build, and the App Store version hides the feature rather than offering it and failing.

Which one should you pick?
Take the direct download if you want the whole app. It’s the complete product — everything above works, you pay once instead of subscribing, and the lifetime license covers up to three Macs. If you’re a developer, or you’re cleaning a Mac that’s genuinely full, the system-level cleaning and the proper uninstaller are most of the reason to use a tool like this at all.
Take the App Store version if you’d rather try before you pay, want Apple handling the billing and updates, or simply prefer installing everything from one place. The core cleaning — junk, duplicates, similar photos, large files, browser data — all works, and for a Mac whose clutter is mostly in the home folder that may be all you need.
Both versions can be installed on the same Mac if you want to compare; they’re separate apps as far as macOS is concerned.
Notes on the direct version
- Your key arrives by email. Payment goes through Stripe, and the license key is emailed to the address you paid with, usually within a few minutes. If it hasn’t arrived, check spam first, then email support@mzjpg.com.
- A key covers seats, not installs. The lifetime license activates on up to three Macs; you can move a seat to a new machine when you retire an old one.
- Refunds revoke the key. If we refund a purchase in full, the license it issued stops working — which is exactly what you’d expect, and worth knowing before you pass a key to someone else.
- The 1-year license runs for 365 days from purchase. The lifetime license never expires.
Buying in one channel doesn’t carry over to the other — an App Store subscription won’t unlock a copy downloaded from this site, and a license key won’t unlock the App Store build. Pick the one that suits you and stay with it.
