Nav Rules Privacy Policy

App: Nav Rules: COLREGS Exam Prep Last updated: 2026-08-05

Nav Rules is an offline study app for the USCG Rules of the Road exam. The entire question bank, all diagrams, and the complete rule text ship inside the app, so it works with no network connection at all. There are no accounts, no advertising, no third-party analytics, and no servers of ours for your data to travel to. This policy explains what the app handles and what it does not do.

Summary

  • We do not collect your personal data. The app has no user accounts and we operate no servers that receive information from it.
  • The app requests no iOS permissions. No location, no camera, no microphone, no photo library, no notifications.
  • Your study progress stays on your device, in Apple’s on-device storage.
  • iCloud sync is off by default. If you turn it on, your progress syncs through your own iCloud account — not through us.
  • No ads. No third-party trackers or analytics SDKs.

Overview

Nav Rules (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a self-contained study aid: 1,200 practice questions, 83 original diagrams, and the full rule text in 52 chapters, all bundled with the app itself. Because the content is local, the app does not need to reach the internet to function, and it does not.

Data We Collect

We collect nothing. The app has no analytics, no crash-reporting SDK, no advertising identifier use, and no telemetry of any kind.

iOS permissions

The app requests no system permissions. It does not ask for your location, camera, microphone, photo library, contacts, or notification access, because none of its features need them.

Data you create

As you study, the app records your progress on your device: which questions you have answered and how, which you missed, your bookmarks, your spaced-repetition review schedule, your exam sessions and scores, and your app settings. This is generated entirely by your own use of the app and is stored using Apple’s SwiftData framework on the device.

Purchases

Nav Rules is a one-time paid app with no in-app purchases and no subscription. Any purchase is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store; the app itself contains no payment code and we never see or store your payment details. That transaction is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.

How We Use Data

All processing happens on your device. Your answer history is used to grade you, to build the missed-questions list, to schedule spaced repetition, and to draw your readiness dial, topic heatmap, and per-rule accuracy. None of it is used for advertising or profiling, and none of it is sent to us.

Data Storage

Your study data lives on your device by default and stays there.

Optional iCloud sync. In Settings you can turn on iCloud sync to keep your progress in step across your iPhone and iPad. It is disabled by default. When enabled, your progress records are stored in your own private iCloud database via Apple’s CloudKit — an account you control, under Apple’s privacy policy. We have no access to it. If iCloud is unavailable for any reason — not signed in, sync switched off, no connectivity — the app silently falls back to local-only storage and keeps working exactly as before.

Sharing

We do not sell or share your data, and we have none to sell or share. Nothing leaves your device except through iCloud sync if you have explicitly enabled it, or through an action you take yourself, such as using the iOS share sheet.

Third-Party Services

None. Nav Rules embeds no advertising networks, no analytics SDKs, and no third-party trackers, and it does not track you across other apps or websites. The only Apple services involved are the App Store (for the purchase and app updates) and CloudKit (only if you turn sync on).

If diagnostics are ever added in a future version, they will be opt-in, and this policy will be updated before that ships.

Your Choices

  • Turn iCloud sync on or off at any time in the app’s Settings.
  • Reset your progress from within the app.
  • Delete everything by removing the app from your device. If you used iCloud sync, you can also remove the app’s data from iCloud in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud.

Because we hold no data about you, there is nothing on our side to request, correct, or delete. If your jurisdiction grants you rights over personal data (e.g. GDPR, CCPA), those rights have no data of ours to apply to.

Security

Your data resides on your device and is protected by iOS’s built-in security and whatever device protections you have enabled (passcode, Face ID/Touch ID, device encryption). Synced data is protected by Apple’s iCloud security. We recommend keeping your device secured and up to date.

Children’s Privacy

Nav Rules is intended for a general audience of mariners and students and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect new features or legal requirements. Any change will be reflected by the Last updated date above.
