MGRS Privacy Policy
App: MGRS Effective date: 22 June 2026 Last updated: 22 June 2026
MGRS is an MGRS-first land-navigation tool for iOS. It is designed to be privacy-preserving by default: there are no user accounts, no advertising, no third-party analytics, and no cloud sync. This policy explains what data the app handles and what it does not do.
Summary
- We do not collect your personal data. MGRS has no servers that receive your information and no user accounts.
- Your location stays on your device. It is used only to show your position and to power navigation, waypoints, and track recording.
- Your waypoints, overlays, tracks, and routes are stored locally on your device. We never upload them.
- No ads. No third-party trackers or analytics SDKs.
- You are in control of sharing. Data leaves your device only when you choose to share or export it (e.g. copy a grid, AirDrop a waypoint, export a GPX file).
1. Who we are
MGRS (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is developed and published by the app’s developer. For privacy questions, contact us at the address in Section 11.
2. Information the app handles
2.1 Location data
With your permission, MGRS accesses your device’s location through Apple’s Core Location framework to:
- display your current position as an MGRS/USNG/UTM/Lat-Lon grid reference;
- compute distance, bearing, heading, speed, and navigation to waypoints;
- record breadcrumb tracks when you start a recording (this may use background location while a recording is active).
Location data is processed on your device. It is not transmitted to us or to any third party. It is stored on your device only when you save it as a waypoint or as part of a recorded track.
You can grant When In Use access for core features. Always access is requested only if and when you start track recording, so a track can continue while the app is in the background. You can change or revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
2.2 Content you create
Waypoints, overlays, tracks, routes, drawn shapes, notes, and app settings are stored locally on your device (using Apple’s SwiftData and on-device storage). This content remains on your device unless you explicitly export or share it.
2.3 Maps and offline tiles
The MVP map uses Apple Maps (MapKit). When you view online map tiles, your device requests those tiles from Apple; that interaction is governed by Apple’s privacy policy. Offline maps you supply (e.g. MBTiles) and any cached tiles are stored and read locally on your device.
2.4 Purchases
If MGRS offers a paid unlock, purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit / the App Store. We do not see or store your payment details. Purchase and transaction handling is governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
3. What we do NOT collect
MGRS does not:
- require an account, email, name, or login;
- include advertising or ad SDKs;
- include third-party analytics or tracking SDKs;
- sell or share your data with data brokers;
- sync your data to any cloud service operated by us;
- track you across other apps or websites.
If diagnostics are ever added in a future version, they will be opt-in and aggregated on-device, and this policy will be updated first.
4. How your data is used
The data the app handles is used solely to provide the app’s features on your device: showing your grid, navigating, marking and organizing waypoints, and recording tracks. We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.
5. Sharing and disclosure
We do not disclose your data because we do not collect it. Information leaves your device only when you initiate an action, such as:
- copying a grid reference to the clipboard;
- using the iOS share sheet to share a location, waypoint, or file;
- generating or scanning a QR code;
- AirDropping a waypoint to another device;
- exporting GPX/KML/CSV files.
Once you share or export data, how the receiving app, service, or person handles it is outside our control and subject to their terms.
6. Data retention and deletion
Your content stays on your device until you delete it. You can delete waypoints, overlays, tracks, and routes within the app, and you can remove all MGRS data by deleting the app from your device. Because we do not store your data on any server, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
7. Children’s privacy
MGRS is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
8. Security
Your data resides on your device and is protected by iOS’s built-in security and the device protections you have enabled (passcode, Face ID/Touch ID, device encryption). We recommend keeping your device secured and up to date.
9. Your rights
Because all your data stays on your device and under your control, you can access, modify, export, or delete it at any time directly within the app or via iOS. Depending on your jurisdiction (e.g. GDPR, CCPA), you may have additional rights regarding personal data; since we do not collect or hold your personal data, there is no data on our side to which those requests would apply.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy to reflect new features or legal requirements. Material changes will be noted by updating the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, surfaced in the app. Continued use after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
