RunTrace Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-05
Overview
RunTrace (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a running tracker for iPhone and Apple Watch. It is privacy-first by design: we have no servers, no user accounts, and no analytics. Your runs, routes, and health data stay on your device and in your own private iCloud. This policy explains exactly what the app accesses, why, and what — if anything — leaves your device.
Summary (the short version)
- We do not collect, store, or sell your personal data.
- We operate no servers and there is nothing to sign up for.
- No analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no third-party SDKs.
- Health and location data are processed entirely on your device.
- Data leaves your device only when you choose to share or export it, or through your own private iCloud account.
Data We Collect
RunTrace requests the following iOS permissions. Each is used only for the feature it names, and all of them are optional — the app simply does less without them.
Apple Health (HealthKit)
RunTrace reads your running workouts, routes, heart rate, and related metrics (VO₂ Max, resting heart rate, HRV, running form measurements) from Apple Health so it can show your complete running history and trends, including runs recorded on a watch or in another app. It writes the runs you record — with their route and estimated calories — back to Apple Health so they appear alongside your other workouts.
Health data is never transmitted off your device by RunTrace. We have no ability to see it. You choose exactly which health categories to grant in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → RunTrace, and can revoke any of them at any time.
Location
RunTrace uses your device’s GPS through Apple’s Core Location framework to map your route and to measure distance and pace while you run.
- While-Using permission powers route mapping and live pace.
- “Always” / background permission keeps a run recording when the screen is locked or you switch to another app, so a run is never cut short.
- Location is used only during an active recording and is processed on your device.
You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → RunTrace.
Motion & Fitness
Motion data is used to measure your running cadence and to keep distance accurate when the GPS signal is weak. It is read and used on the device only.
Notifications
If you enable weekly-goal reminders, RunTrace schedules local notifications on your device. Nothing is sent through a remote push service and no reminder content leaves your device.
How We Use Data
All processing — route analysis, splits, heart-rate zones, best efforts, personal records, training load (Fitness / Fatigue / Form), trend charts, and the share card — happens locally on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Nothing is uploaded for analysis, and no run is processed on any server.
Data Storage
- Runs you record are stored on your device using Apple’s SwiftData.
- If iCloud is enabled on your device, that database syncs through your own private iCloud (CloudKit private database) so your runs follow you between your devices. This data lives in your Apple account under Apple’s terms; we have no access to it. You can turn iCloud off for RunTrace in iOS Settings.
- Workouts read from Apple Health remain in Apple Health, governed by Apple’s own privacy protections. What RunTrace reads from Apple Health stays on the device it read it from.
- Deleting a run in the app removes it from your device (and from your iCloud copy). Deleting the app removes its local data.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone. Data leaves your device only when you deliberately act:
- Sharing a share card image through the iOS share sheet, to a destination you pick.
- Exporting a run — or all runs — as a GPX file, saved or sent wherever you choose.
Once you hand a file or image to another app or service, that destination’s own privacy policy applies.
Third-Party Services
RunTrace includes no analytics, advertising, tracking, or third-party SDKs, and makes no network requests of its own. Map views are drawn by Apple’s MapKit, so map tiles are fetched by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy. iCloud sync is handled by Apple. If you purchased the app, that transaction is handled entirely by Apple’s App Store; we never see your payment details.
RunTrace is a one-time purchase — there are no subscriptions, in-app unlocks, or paywalls, and therefore no purchase tracking inside the app.
Your Choices
- Revoke any permission — Health, Location, Motion, Notifications — in iOS Settings at any time.
- Delete a run in the app to remove it permanently from your device.
- Turn off iCloud for RunTrace to keep everything on a single device.
- Delete the app to remove all of its local data.
- Health data written by RunTrace can be deleted in Apple’s Health app.
Children’s Privacy
RunTrace does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Because the app collects nothing and has no accounts, there is no such data for us to hold.
