Owl Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-08-19

Overview

Owl is a Safari extension for iPhone, iPad and Mac that gives every website a dark theme, generated on the fly from each page’s own colors. It is built to be privacy-first: every color decision is made on your device, there is no account and no sign-in, and Owl operates no servers to send anything to. Nothing about your browsing is collected, stored or transmitted to us.

Data We Collect

Owl collects nothing. It has no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifier, and no account system. We do not receive your browsing history, the pages you visit, the sites you have darkened, or anything else.

To generate a dark theme, the extension does need to look at the page you are reading:

  • Website access: Owl runs on the pages you browse so it can read their stylesheets and rewrite the colors before the page paints. This is why Safari asks you to allow the extension on websites, and why choosing “Allow on Every Website” is what lets Owl work as you browse. What it reads is used to build the theme for that page, in that moment, and is discarded — it is never recorded or sent anywhere.
  • Images: Owl examines the pixels of images on the page to tell a photograph from an icon, so photos keep their colors and a black icon on a transparent background does not vanish into the dark. This analysis runs on your device, and the image never leaves it.
  • Page addresses: the address of the tab you are viewing is used to look up whether you have turned Owl on or off for that site, and whether the site already ships its own dark theme. It is matched against data stored on your device and against a site-compatibility list bundled inside the app.

How We Use Data

All of the work happens locally. Owl parses the CSS a page already delivered to your browser, computes new colors from it, and applies them in that tab. The site-compatibility data — the list of sites needing corrections, sites that are already dark, and fallback stylesheets — ships inside the app itself and is read from local files, not downloaded.

While theming a page, Owl’s background process may request that page’s own stylesheets and images directly from the site serving them. This is necessary because a content script cannot read a cross-origin stylesheet or draw a cross-origin image without those requests. These go to the website you are already visiting, are made without cookies or credentials, and go nowhere else — never to us or to any third party.

Data Storage

Your settings — the master switch, your theme and sliders, your per-site choices, your lists of sites to darken or skip, and your schedule — are stored locally on your device using the browser’s own local extension storage. They are not synced to any server of ours and are not uploaded anywhere. Removing the app removes them.

Sharing

Owl does not sell or share your data. Because nothing is collected and nothing leaves your device, there is nothing to share.

Third-Party Services

Owl uses no analytics, advertising, tracking, or data-processing services, and loads no remote code — all of its logic and data ship inside the app. The only external service involved is Apple’s App Store, which handles the purchase of the app. Apple processes that transaction; we never receive your payment information or Apple Account details.

Your Choices

  • Turn Owl off entirely, or turn it off for any individual site, at any time.
  • Choose whether new sites are darkened by default, and keep your own lists of sites to darken or skip.
  • Review or revoke the extension’s website access in Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Safari ▸ Extensions on iPhone and iPad, or Safari ▸ Settings ▸ Extensions on the Mac.
  • Reset all settings from within the extension, or delete the app to remove everything it stored.

Children’s Privacy

Owl does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13. The app has no account system and collects no personal data at all.
