Overview

ShadowGerman (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) is a German shadowing and speaking trainer built to keep your data on your device. The app does not require an account, does not run analytics or advertising, and does not send your voice recordings or personal information to our servers. This policy explains the few kinds of data the app handles and the choices you have.

Data We Collect

Microphone / voice recordings: When you record yourself shadowing a sentence, the app uses the microphone to capture your audio. Recordings are stored only on your device so you can play them back against the original. They are never uploaded to us, and they are not included in iCloud sync.
Text and PDFs you import: If you bring your own German text or a PDF, the app reads and splits it into sentences on your device. Imported content is not transmitted to us.
Learning progress: Lessons completed, exercise results, saved wordbook entries, XP, level, and daily streak are stored on your device to track your practice.
Purchase status: Premium purchases are processed by Apple. The app receives your entitlement (whether Premium is active) from Apple but never sees your payment details.
We do not access your photos, location, contacts, or advertising identifiers, and the app contains no speech-recognition or tracking features.

How We Use Data

Everything needed to practice — playing native audio, on-device text-to-speech, recording and comparing your voice, grading exercises, and splitting imported text — runs locally on your device.
The German voice is generated entirely on-device and works fully offline.
Progress data is used only to show your history, review words with spaced repetition, and keep your streak and XP.

iCloud Sync

Your learning progress (lessons and word mastery) and your streak/XP sync through your own private iCloud account using Apple’s SwiftData + CloudKit and iCloud Key-Value Storage, so it follows you across your devices.
This data lives in your iCloud, governed by Apple’s terms — we do not operate a server that stores it and cannot read it.
Voice recordings do not sync and remain only on the device that made them.
You can turn this off by disabling iCloud for the app in iOS Settings.

Downloading Lessons

To deliver the full lesson library, the app may connect to our content service to download lesson text over a secure, certificate-pinned connection.
This request authenticates the app itself — it does not use an account and does not send your identity, progress, recordings, or any personal data. If the network is unavailable, the app falls back to lessons already bundled or cached on the device, so practice never depends on being online.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data.
Data leaves your device only when you choose to — for example by sharing or exporting a file through the iOS share sheet — and then only to the destination you pick.
Apple may process data as needed to complete purchases or provide iCloud sync, under Apple’s own privacy policy.

Third-Party Services

The app includes no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
The only external parties involved are Apple (App Store / StoreKit purchases and iCloud sync) and our own content service used solely to download lesson text as described above.

Your Choices

Microphone: Revoke microphone access anytime in iOS Settings; recording features will simply stop working.
iCloud: Disable iCloud sync for the app in Settings to keep progress on a single device.
Your data: Delete recordings, imported documents, and saved words from within the app. Removing the app deletes its local data from that device.

Children’s Privacy

ShadowGerman is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your region) and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes are reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
